Currently onto album number three, Magic Dirt continue to explore and push the boundaries of their experimental rock sound that, since the release the 1994 EP, ‘Life was Better’ has proved a favourite to music lovers. ‘Life was Better’ enjoyed an amazing 70 weeks in the Alternative Charts securing them supports with the likes of Sonic Youth, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Hole, Beck and Dinosaur Jr. Two years later, Magic Dirt released their first album, ‘Friends In Danger’, that in 1996 was voted by Rolling Stone Magazine (Australia) as one of the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time. That same year Magic Dirt packed up their guitars and headed off on tour to the USA and UK to promote their international releases.

1997 saw Magic Dirt tour nationally on the sold out Silverchair Summer Freakshow, and was a year of intense barrage of press, touring and commercial success that catapulted the band further into the public eye. The band went into self-imposed hibernation and had a much-needed break from the live circuit while they recorded their long awaited follow up album. ‘Young and Full Of the Devil’, the band’s second album was released in 1998, immediately injecting new enthusiasm and closeness within the band. Two album singles, ‘Rabbit With Fangs’ and ‘She-riff’ were added to high rotation on Triple J and the band headlined another of their own national tours and started a prolific writing period for their new album.

Magic Dirt began 2000 previewing tracks from the new album while touring nationally with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and on the Big Day Out in January. The band returned to the scene with a ferocity that had been absent from the Australian live circuit for years. The new tracks wooed many and kindled new interest and passion for noisy rock with beautiful melodies and hypnotic lyrics. Warner Music Australia were particularly interested in Magic Dirt’s new material and the band signed a major recording deal with them in June while recording their third album.

It had been over two years since the band had been in the studio and for the first time ever, Magic Dirt employed the services of a Producer to make their upcoming album. Magic Dirt were joined by English producer Phil Vinall who had previously worked with bands such as Radiohead, Elastica and Placebo. The album is due for release in October and Magic Dirt’s first single, ‘Dirty Jeans’ will be on the radio and in stores in August. The single will also feature a cover of Liz Phair’s ‘Supernova’ taken from the soundtrack for the Australian film ‘Looking For Alibrandi’. A brand new track ‘Kidbug’ will also feature on the single and if the combination of power and pop sensibility on these tracks are anything to go by, Magic Dirt are with out a doubt set to rock our souls - again and again.
